A Drumbeat for Open Source in K-12

Mozilla Drumbeat is a global community of people and projects using technology to help internet users understand, participate and take control of their online lives.

I’ve done a bit of head-scratching over what one possible Drumbeat project aimed at K-12 education might look like.

If you have an interest in helping K-12 education make better use of FOSS and the Open Web, please take a moment to look at the wiki page, add your name to the participants list, and hack on the page to make it better.

If you know anyone with an interest in helping K-12 education make better use of FOSS and the Open Web, please ask them to do the same.

  • Richard,
I’m glad to see attention brought to this issue. I’ve often wondered about the “browser wars” in K-12. We have long offered Firefox as an optional browser in my district. Recently we’ve also noticed some web based K-12 software companies requiring the use of Firefox. I think this is a great move, but possibly a little too late.

Microsoft tries hard to brainwash young users into their products. Its a lot like the Camel Joe adds focused on young smokers. I’m not saying Microsoft is the same as cigarettes, they are just using the same tactics. Almost giving away their products to K-12 to ensure Microsoft Office is equivalent to word processing. That said, I welcome all work toward integrating open source into K-12.

  • Hey Richard,
I have joined the wiki as you suggested. I do not have a strong background in programming, but I am definitely eager and willing to help in any way. I am an amateur graphic designer if that helps any. I’m anxious to hear more about your Drumbeat project aimed at K-12 education. I occasionally get ideas for different types of software/plug-ins, but lack the expertise to ever create any of them.
